Founded in 1992, the American Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF) works to increase access to quality medical care for Nicaraguans. Its goal is to reduce mortality rates and combat disease in a country where only 6.3 percent of the population is insured and 32 public hospitals serve a population of 5.5 million. These and other barriers to quality health care has negatively impacted the overall health of Nicaraguans; currently 3 out of 10 suffer from malnutrition and one out of every 23 children dies before reaching the age of five.

ANF supports local not-for-profit organizations across Nicaragua that are chosen for their effectiveness, spirit of service, and transparency. This approach allows ANF to efficiently meet community needs while strengthening community assets such as schools, nutritional centers, health centers, dispensaries, elderly care centers, and orphanages.

ANF’s nutrition programs aim to reduce malnourishment rates and imporve maternal and elderly health. Healthcare programs increase access to quality medical care to reduce mortality rates and combat diseases or illness.

Direct Relief International has partnered with the American Nicaraguan Foundation for 14 years. The organization has provided ANF’s network of 300 health facilities and hospitals with contributions of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies including pain medications, antibiotics, nutritional supplements, and personal care products. This targeted assistance has helped an estimated 116,890 people through ANF’s extensive hospital and clinic network.
