As part of the ongoing emergency response to extensive flooding in Pakistan that has displaced millions of people, Direct Relief is sending almost $1.25 million (wholesale) in medical aid to Murshid Hospital in Sindh. Containing medical products the hospital specifically requested, the shipment includes antibiotics, multivitamins, syringes and needles, surgical instruments, and more.

Several partners in Pakistan have reported that refugee and relief camps are becoming long-term homes for people displaced by monsoon flooding throughout most of the country, including Sindh, the southernmost province, which continues to flood.  As affected populations settle into these densely populated camps, the risk increases for sanitation and health issues like acute diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, and skin disease. The United Nations also warns of a significant risk for pediatric malnutrition and malaria, especially in Sindh and Balochistan Provinces.

To support the work of partners who have been providing health care in high-need regions in Pakistan, Direct Relief is identifying needs for additional aid to the American Refugee Committee (ARC) and Marie Stopes Society Pakistan (MSSP). Direct Relief’s emergency response team is also in contact with the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) and others to support their care for flood displaced.
