Direct Relief’s Emergency Response Team is monitoring Super Typhoon Vongfong as it approaches Japan as well as Tropical Cyclone Hudhud as it approaches the coast of India, reaching out to partners and ready to respond to medical needs.
Super Typhoon Vongfong – Japan
Category 5 Super Typhoon Vongfong is currently tracking off the south coast of Japan and is predicted to make landfall around October 12. Typhoon Vongfong intensified from a category 2 to a category 5 on Monday with wind speeds recorded by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center of up to 180mph. These wind speeds rival those of Super Typhoon Haiyan which gusted up to 195mph as it approached the Philippines in November 2013.
Direct Relief is reaching out to healthcare partners in Japan to offer support and will be closely monitoring the situation as it develops.
Tropical Cyclone Hudhud – India
Tropical Cyclone Hudhud is due to make landfall on the eastern coast of India on October 12. The typhoon is currently tracking northwest across the Bay of Bengal and is expected to bring heavy rains and storm surges to the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
