Zika Virus, a mosquito-borne virus that is linked to multiple health issues, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly in newborns, has spread to 21 countries in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In Brazil, a country that has been especially hard hit by the virus, an estimated 1.5 million people may have been infected, most of whom are unaware of it.
The CDC has advised pregnant women to avoid traveling to any country affected by the virus.
In response to a recent outbreak in Haiti, Direct Relief is providing St. Boniface Haiti Foundation with 252 units of insect repellent, specifically for prevention of the Zika Virus. Direct Relief will monitor the outbreak as it develops.
