A 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Saturday hit the Lake Victoria Region of northern Tanzania. The earthquake — the strongest to hit the country in decades — caused widespread damage. As many 840 houses were destroyed completely, leaving thousands homeless. The earthquake also claimed at least 16 lives and left hundreds injured.
Direct Relief is in communication with local partners and is preparing an emergency shipment of requested medicines and supplies that will depart shortly for the affected region.
