Forecasters are keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Beryl, a tiny storm that has gathered strength with hurricane force winds in the Atlantic Ocean. Because the storm is small, projecting its path and impact are difficult, but Direct Relief is reaching out to healthcare partners in the Caribbean and will respond should the need arise.
The hurricane may reach the Lesser Antilles late Sunday with hurricane-force winds, though it’s still too early to firmly say which islands could see impacts.
Many places throughout the region are still reeling from last year’s hurricane season, during which Hurricanes Irma and Maria churned a destructive path through the Caribbean. Puerto Rico, Dominica and many other islands were seriously impacted then, and Direct Relief staff will be in contact with healthcare facilities in those areas as Beryl tracks westward.
