Over the past seven days, Direct Relief has delivered 559 shipments of requested medical aid to 49 U.S. states and territories and 12 countries worldwide.

The shipments contained 4.1 million defined daily doses of medication, including antibiotics, cardiovascular medications, vaccines, and more.

The organization is tracking multiple responses across the globe and will continue to respond.

Afghanistan

This week, Afshar Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan received 500 Direct Relief personal care kits and 36 field medic packs to support the hospital’s patients and surrounding community members.

Afshar Hospital provided a team of physicians and nurses in response to the earthquake that hit the region in June 2022, and the hospital requested this shipment to have in preparation for future medical emergencies.

Hurricane Julia

Guatemala and El Salvador experienced torrential rains this week as Hurricane Julia dissipated after hitting Nicaragua, forcing thousands to evacuate and resulting in 28 deaths.

Direct Relief is coordinating medical shipments to the region to support local healthcare providers responding to the storm. The organization is also providing information insights to first responders and government agencies about population movement as a result of the storm.

Haiti Cholera Outbreak

The World Health Organization and PAHO are reporting that cholera has returned to Haiti, having already resulted in seven deaths and more than thirty confirmed active cases. Warnings are being issued that a number of cases have likely gone undiagnosed and there is potential for more to emerge.

As the public health situation continues to deteriorate, in the past month, gangs have controlled a large number of areas in the country, blocking access to Haiti’s largest fuel port, disrupting aid routes, and stopping water trucks from resupplying neighborhoods.

Cholera is typically spread by contaminated food or water containing the fecal matter of a sick person, and without access to clean water sources or fully functioning health facilities, the fuel shortages only further hinder efforts to stop the spread.

Direct Relief staff has been in direct communication with PAHO and the Haitian Ministry of Health to deliver nine pallets worth of requested medical supplies including antibiotics and medications.

Ukraine

Since February 24, Direct Relief has provided medical aid to Ukraine weighing more than 1.9 million pounds, or 950 tons, with more on the way.

This week, the organization prepared more than 40 pallets of medical aid for Ukraine, and those shipments are expected to depart next week.

These shipments contained 467.4 million defined daily doses of medication valued at $1.4 billion (wholesale), totaling 10.1 million lbs.
